TY Theory

So I was reading a post on some of the most successful/

profitable start up brands. TY Beanie Babies was

one company on the list. TY Warner, the owner of the company, had

some brilliant market strategies, some of which sort of relate

to myself and my Kicks clothing line (however I wasn't

thinking about these at the time and now it kinda makes

sense).

The TY brand for the most part was never sold in large toy stores...

Prices remained reasonable, but you had to search to

find them....which resulted in a mad craze to find them,

and willingness to pay good money for them...Similar to

myself, where I really have not advertised a ton, but

have slowly and secretly got the brand out there, and

now more than ever, people want Kicks....

TY also limited some designs, making them rare and,

thus more desirable....Similar to Kicks, which advertises

one of a kind custom logos and graphics.

You look more and more these days and companies

are pushing custom products...you will pay more

of course, but people will because they want to have

their very own "personalized" items...that no one else has.

This a sort of what's happened with Kicks, which was the

goal all along....to provide people with a fresh brand

and allow them to become their own logo and get

what they want. It's amazing, people will

keep coming, and I will continue to give them what they

want (within reason haha). And the best part

is, what they want is what I REALLY enjoy doing!

RIT: By Design

I continue to be proud of my RIT Alma mater...I recently
read an article in the RIT University news magazine on
the growing interest and excellence of RIT's industrial
design department. The article talks about a few
designers including my friend (lived next to me
my freshman year) Dan Bolinksi....Dan is an excellent
illustrator and apparel designer....He worked for Reebok
and now will be working for Nike. RIT's ID program has
grown in large strides ever since I left the program in 2008.
In the article it states, the program continues to get
even more competitive...taking around 45 students from
a applicable field of around 180! Im proud to be a graduate!

Art runs in the family.

I recently became connected to a kid named
Chris Lizzi. He is a Syracuse musician that
has moved down to Virgina to spread his
music. I came upon his cd last spring....I
bought it at a Wegmans, where Chris had
worked and got 10 area stores to carry
the cd; where some of the proceeds went
to the Hillside program. I instantly loved
the music and contacted Chris about doing
shirts with him.

Long story short its been a year, and Chris
is doing well, and we are slowly working some
shirt designs to the public.

I think over anything I have enjoyed
getting to know Chris, his family and
friends. His mother Debbie is a talented
shell designer, making awesome center
pieces and ornaments. The family is
blessed with talent!

I recently read a post by a fellow
friend and designer (Micah Rich).
In the post he talked about his
works with his web company, creating
aps and customer interaction. He
is doing well, yet he noticed
a fair amount of his customers are
taking advantage of his company's
"free" website opportunities. He
debated on whether he as a designer
should value those kind of customers
versus the big spenders. He concluded
that all customers, no matter ones using
him for free or paying, is a valued customer.

I agree with Micah, like himself my
Kicks clothing business is fairly
small with a growing clientele. But,
no matter if the order is 3 shirts
or 50 each customer deserves the
same great service. That's how good
business grows....good relationships.
People who had a great experience will
come back and tell others. And soon
your small business is now a solid
company...makes sense right...not
always easy to do but its a risk...
a gamble that good people will carry
you....And they will.

Nike has used Syracuse as one of it's big schools
to show off new styles and techniques in uniforms,
particularly in Basketball and lacrosse. I really enjoy
what they did for the Lax uniforms a year or so ago,
putting logos in the lower section.

They have since gone away with it, or it seems like they have.
And currently they look to be using the "old" stlye
uniforms and colors. But Nike can afford to take risks,
so you always have to look at what they are doing.

I love following old classmates. Erin is from Albany and graduated

A look at one of my favorite galleies in Cali:
George Krevsky. Of coarse it's baseball and of coarse
its got to have a little watercolor (or the illusion
of it.) First image is mixed media titled Winky SF
Seals Bat Boy by Stacey Carter. The second is a litho
titled Dock’s Psychedelic No-No (the skeleton) by

Nike football uniforms

I believe (though Im not a huge fan of the brand) Nike will
take the style of sports uniforms to a whole new
"artistic" level, and although they might not have tons
of fans for these "futuristic" style jerseys, it's just
really cool to me! Recently Nike [or someone released]
sketches for future jerseys for the NFL, whether they
are real or not I am excited to see what they do. Reebok
was recently out bid for the rights to the NFL by Nike,
thus Nike will be the official carrier of the league.

Nike of coarse has done the most interesting designs
for its home grown team, the Oregon Ducks, touting
the razor like wings on the shoulder blades of their
football jerseys. Whether, I repesct the brand or not,
I give Nike credit for really bringing an artistic feel
to their gear, and I am excited to see more!

Vignelli comes to RIT!

MacKenzie-Childs revisit

Back in high school we got a chance to visit Mackenzie-Childs
in Aurora, NY. The company does a lot of handmade home
products that boast brilliant shapes, colors and designs. Above
is one of my favorites, the vase is very friendly and something
I would like someday! If you are ever in the area you have
to check out MacKenzie-Childs, its a very neat place with
a unique atmosphere!

Finish Line Custom Kiosks

FinishLine and Nike are now introducing custom shirt
kiosks, where you can design your own shirt (from
a selective database renewed every 30 days). Shirts
cost around 30$. Look for one in your local FinishLine
soon, this is something Kicks looks to do in the future!

Energizer: Cell charging pad

charging pad. I believe you can use it for all phones,
or maybe its just smart phones, but either way its
a cool concept especially if you lost your cord or
needed to charge a few phones at once.

Company: Dry Planet

Dry Planet is another company playing with design
and saving the environment. One product launched
by Dry Palnet and designer Paul Priestman is the
WaterPebble. The WaterPebble is placed by your shower
drain. The product lets out a series of lights (as a timer),
to let you know when to stop your shower, so you
aren't wasting water. Cool idea!

As designers we are always looking for inspiration.
I think one of my favorite resources of inspiration
is magazines. I recently was at Toyota getting my
car checked and I found this Eco magazine Scion
had published. I sat down and browsed the magazine.
To my surprise I found some cool articles.

This one on a new company called Ecovative Design.
Their big product is bioinsulator/packaging. I am
always being pulled in by natural design becuase it
is a definite must in

So some cool stuff happening at Evovative, and it's
from an RPI grad, so not to far from Syracuse!

today...okkayy..wow...but the news
I want to share with you is that the
bag is completely compostable...meaning
within the correct measures the bag will
break down into soil in 1-2 months...turning

Kicks recent inspiration: That's G

Inspired by the reinvention of Gatorade
and Meredith Mandel's typeface: Chunkfive, Kicks
looks to create a similar feel in its clothing line with
the sporty and bold look of Chunk. I
found yet another a similar font in Deeb...Gatorade
is almost like a blend of Chunk and Deeb!

I like this company. They clearly are focusing on creating new
trends in the baseball world. It would be neat to work for them.
I have talked to one of the owners...a nice guy. Here are some
concepts for a heated glove and ambidextrous glove. Both
ideas have come up in my head but they have the money and
the patent!

Ok So I'm not a huge advocate of Walmart...I understand it's cheap
but sometimes you get what you pay for. Anyways they came out
with these eco gift cards. They contain poppy seeds that you can
grow. You can also break off a part of the card and use it as a garden
marker. Pretty cool!

Old Time Baseball

I really enjoy this picture. To see the roots of baseball through
photographs is just amazing. I also love the old time uniforms.
For example, I really like this sweater Honus Wagner has on
and would like to some day make my own or have someone
make me one similar. Maybe I could even bring the stlye back
into the fashion world. Who knows?!!

This guy has done some really cool work. I was watching a little bit
about him on TV (on WCNY). He just seems fascinating. One fact
that I did pick up on is that he is big into transparency in his designs.
I'm going to do some more research on him. Check him out!

Great book. If you're a baseball lover and entrepreneur. Explains a lot
and there are a lot of aha moments. Believe it or not Spalding is still
going pretty strong 100 years later. A tour worth taking. Great read
overall, I recommend it.

Here is one of my studies. I have taken old Wegmans (NY grocery) yogurt
cups and made an interpretive flower piece. It is what it is. There is just
something to be said on design and its purpose nowadays. As designers
reuse should always be considered...turning things of "otherwise no value"
into something of future value.

A new interesting artist I just found. She has been creating baseball
art since the 80's. She even did some commission work for SafeCo field.
These lino prints are awesome and inspired by the
